SBM Online: The School of Business Management (SBM) recently held a Dialogue Session between the SBM Dean and postgraduate students on 5th of November, 2017 at Kedah Room, SBMUUM. In his welcoming speech, SBM’s Dean, Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah expressed his gratitude to all students for the positive support in attending the session and further emphasized that the meeting is meant to serve as a platform to strengthen the relationship between postgraduate students and SBM’s management team. He encouraged students to freely voice their concerns and suggestions and he ensured that the school has always been ready to provide necessary assistance to serve the students better.
During the session, the Dean deliberated seven initiatives. Firstly, he reminded the students on the importance of producing quality publications in order to achieve SBM’s strategic plans. He fortified all students to produce and increase publication of high-impact journals, especially the Scopus indexed and ISI journals. He also highlighted on the importance of " ’who’ cites you?” as he urged to increase the total number of citations among the authors in order to achieve one of the school’s KPIs.
Secondly, the Dean also suggested and requested the students to organize a small-scale SBM conference among the postgraduate students to help build confidence level, improvise the communication skill and exchange of ideas. Thirdly, the student in general, has to understand their role in achieving the objectives and learning outcomes of a study course either at the Master or PhD level. It is through an active participation that a student will go a long way in retaining what they have learnt.
Fourthly, students were invited to be a member of PG-SBM Club as this will benefit them. They are also inspired to attend the SBM Postgraduate Talk Series by SBM scholars and learn about various research matters. Fifthly, the Dean recommended the students to organize a ‘Young Scholar Talk’ session among the postgraduate students to give the opportunity for students to share their thoughts and ideas. Sixthly, a workshop on “How To Write A Paper For Beginners” or “How To Publish A Conceptual Paper” will be conducted in the near future to pave ways in cultivating the ‘writing culture’.
Last but not least, students were reminded to defend their PhD proposal with 18 months and they were encouraged to organize a coloqium among them in getting the inputs and advices about their study from SBM scholars. The school is currently aiming to increase the number of students who can graduate on time(GOT).
The interaction session are indeed very promising and the students were given the opportunity to express their views and comments for the benefits of both parties. Also present during the session were Heads of Departments, Postgraduate Coordinators and faculty members
