The Vision Zero Promotion Program with Industry Penang 2024 successfully convened on 11 July 2024 at the elegant Ixora Hotel, Perai, Penang, bringing together key stakeholders from various industries to foster a culture of occupational safety and health (OSH). The event was organized by the Social Security Management Centre of Excellence (SOSCoE) in collaboration with the Social Security Organization (SOCSO) and the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOH). This half-day program marked a significant milestone in advancing safety and health awareness among employers and employees in the region.

The Vision Zero Promotion Program was meticulously designed to achieve the following objectives:

  1. To increase awareness of occupational safety and health among both employers and employees.
  2. To promote understanding of early prevention programs on OSH at workplaces.
  3. To enhance the level of knowledge about OSH practices among participants from various industries.

Acknowledging the importance of workplace safety and health, this program aimed to provide valuable insights and actionable strategies to ensure the well-being of employees while improving organizational productivity. Given that participants were industrial workers, the half-day format of the program was tailored to accommodate their demanding schedules while delivering impactful sessions.

The Vision Zero philosophy, which emphasizes the prevention of work-related accidents and illnesses through a proactive approach, served as the foundation for this program. By collaborating with SOCSO and DOSH, the event underscored the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in achieving a sustainable safety culture within the industrial sector.

The program featured three lecture slots, with notable speakers from key organizations sharing their expertise:

  1. Mr. Harun bin Bakar, Head of the Prevention Branch from SOCSO Ampang, delivered a lecture on the importance of proactive prevention measures in occupational safety and health. He highlighted SOCSO’s role in promoting Vision Zero and shared success stories of industries that have implemented preventive measures to achieve safer work environments.

  2. Ir. Ts. Shahrul Azhar bin Mustaffa, Head of the Small & Medium Industry Section Unit from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOH) Penang, focused on practical strategies for safety compliance in small and medium enterprises (SMEs). His session provided invaluable guidance on adhering to OSH regulations and implementing cost-effective solutions to improve safety standards.

  3. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zuraida binti Hassan, a lecturer from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), captivated the audience with her lecture on the psychosocial aspects of workplace safety. She emphasized the need to address mental health and stress management as part of a comprehensive OSH framework, particularly in high-pressure industrial settings.

The program saw the enthusiastic participation of 57 individuals from various industries across Penang, ranging from manufacturing to logistics and construction. The diversity of participants provided a rich platform for discussion, enabling cross-industry learning and collaboration.

Throughout the program, participants actively engaged in Q&A sessions, exchanging ideas and experiences with the speakers. The interactive format allowed them to address workplace-specific challenges and gain practical solutions directly applicable to their industries.
