SOCSO and UUM Forge Strategic Partnership to Enhance Social Security Management Education

Kuala Lumpur, 6 October 2022 - The Social Security Organization (SOCSO) and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) have solidified their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening their relationship in various domains.

The MoU, signed on Thursday, 6 October 2022, at the SOCSO Tower in Kuala Lumpur, signifies a closer and more comprehensive partnership between the two organizations, with a focus on capacity building, development, research, and the promotion of occupational safety and health.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by key representatives from both institutions. Dato' Sri Dr. Mohammed Azman bin Dato' Aziz Mohammed, Chief Executive of SOCSO, and Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman bin Abdullah, Vice Chancellor of UUM, inked the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations. The ceremony was witnessed by Mr. Azirruan bin Arifin, the Head of Employment Insurance System Office, SOCSO, and Prof. Associate Dr. Md Zawawi bin Abu Bakar, Dean of the School of Psychology Application, Policy, and Social Work at UUM.

This significant collaboration solidifies the commitment of SOCSO and UUM to work together closely and holistically across various fields. The MoU, which was signed on 5 August 2022, outlines cooperation in capacity building, development, research, and the empowerment of occupational safety and health promotion. In support of these initiatives, SOCSO has allocated a substantial sum of RM2.5 million to UUM for the implementation of joint projects over a period of five years.

A notable outcome of this partnership is the establishment of the Social Security Management Center of Excellence (SoSCoE) at the SOCSO Rehabilitation Center in Malacca. SoSCoE serves as a specialized hub for research, training, and education in the field of social security management. It aims to enhance knowledge and expertise in social security policies, practices, and their impact on organizations and employees.

In a pioneering move, SoSCoE will introduce a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resource Management with a Minor in Social Security Management. This exclusive program will be offered to 20 selected SOCSO members, who will commence their studies in November at the SOSCOE Teaching and Learning Center in Melaka. The curriculum has been meticulously designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of human resource management principles while integrating essential aspects of social security management.

The Bachelor's Degree program equips students with the knowledge and skills required to effectively manage human resources within organizations, with a particular emphasis on addressing social security concerns. By incorporating the minor in social security management, graduates will gain specialized expertise in navigating the intricacies of social security systems, policies, and regulations. This unique blend of knowledge and skills will empower graduates to make meaningful contributions to the welfare and well-being of employees while ensuring compliance with social security standards.

The collaborative efforts between SOCSO and UUM reflect their shared commitment to advancing education, research, and practices in the field of social security management. By exclusively offering the Bachelor's Degree program to SOCSO members, the partnership aims to enhance their professional development and career prospects, ultimately contributing to the overall welfare and social security of Malaysian workers.

The establishment of SoSCoE and the introduction of the Bachelor's Degree program represent significant milestones in the partnership between SOCSO and UUM. Both institutions strive to create a positive and sustainable impact on Malaysia's social security landscape. Through this collaboration, they seek to bridge the gap between academia and industry, ensuring that graduates possess the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in the dynamic.
